I think we can all agree that going through life on “auto-pilot” isn’t the best way to get the most out of life.

It’s as if life is passing by, and we’re just waiting for something to happen. But that isn’t really living. Today is happening right now.

So the question is, how can we live each day fully and presently? Well, who better to ask than a mindfulness expert?

Leo Babauta recently wrote a highly in depth article outlining 9 mindful rituals that will transform your life.

I’ve summarized some of his best points below:

1) Sit in the morning

Babauta says that the perfect time enjoy the quiet of the morning is when you wake up. He advises to get a cushion and sit on the floor.

He then uses this time to practice meditation by simply focusing on his breath going in and going out. This will get your mind focused on the present moment, and as you get more practice, your mind will get less distracted as you do it.

After meditation, he then uses this opportunity to stretch every muscle in his body.

2) Brush your teeth

We all brush our teeth, yet almost all of us do this on auto-pilot. Babauta says that this is actually the perfect time to practice mindfulness.

Try to focus fully on the action of brushing, on each stroke of each tooth, going from one side of the mouth to the other. You’ll do a better job and it will help you realize how much we live our lives on auto-pilot.
